He may be crazy but theres more to the story

Although many people McCandless is crazy i dont think he is so crazy. I mean he did survive for 100 and something days living just find. While it was crazy of him to burn his belongings and barry the others, he was actually quite smart. he graduated high school, went to college and graduate and was considering law school. if he was so dumb and crazy then he wouldnt have never gone that far. McCandless wanted to push the limits. He wanted to see how much he could do by himself. He mentioned that his life was more full and interesting when he had no money. He didnt want to depend on these materialistic items. He wanted to be his own person, eat what he wanted, do whats he wanted, and go where he wanted. He just wanted to explore the world-he found excitement in the world. He didnt want to be tied down and put in a cage, he wanted his freedom and he found that out in the wild. i think alot of his decisions were based on that. So he wasnt crazy he just wanted to be independent. He wanted to be his on man. He traveled long and far and got to see and do many of things. While he didnt live long, everyone goes t one point in time, and while his was sooner than later, no one can help that. i think it was reason to why Krakauer praisedq this man, even though many have dont the same thing as McCandless, there was something special. Krakauer constantly compared McCandless to others and it wasnt because he was crazy! i think it was kind of great what he did. i dont think i could do it, or if i had the courage to do. my excitement comes from getting out of under my grandmothers house and being off on my own. im an independent person and being out and away is my freedom and i think McCandless felt the same way!

Zaneta,
I completely agree with you that McCandless was not dumb or crazy. Although he was a naive person he was smarter than most people think. I think he could have been more prepared with food and all but that's the way he chose to live and wanted no help doing it. I think he was brave and true to his word because he followed his dreams and not many people do that. Like you said he wanted to be his own man and live independently for awhile so that's what he did.

I agree with you too! Just because his way of finding himself was different and stranger than how most people do today, it doesn't mean that he was crazy. I admire some of the things he did, but I think most of us have different ways of breaking free that don’t require hurting our family and friends as much as McCandless did. He was one in a million, not because he was a guy that would say that he was going to climb a mountain and then actually do it, but because of the mountains that he set for himself were so grand and unimaginable for most people.

This was exactly what I had talked about in my post. I don't think that McCandless was crazy at all I think that he did what many people wish they could do! He had accomplished a lot before he went on this huge adventure, adn accomplished a lot during his adventure. He earned money and ate anything that was safe to eat. I think that his wanting to be independent ment a lot to him like our independence means a lot to us, he just had a different idea. I think McCandless ahd something special something that not everyone has.

I agree with Zaneta. I think most people are tired of their sorroundings and they feel like they want to escape but they do not have the courage. If anything I dont think Chris is crazy. I think he is a very smart individual. Of course he is a "weirdo" to our generation because we are so dependent on technology. We are so dependent on our cellphones or ipods that we can not focus on nature or being independent. To be honest, no one is independent in this day and age especially when compared to Chris.

you're right McCandless did have strong beliefs he stood up for.In my trouble notes here is one of my favorite quotes from Chris...
...make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstance and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life...you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty. ...in short... hit the Road. I guarantee you'll be glad you did. Alex McCandless
