She’s Come Undone written by Wally Lamb is not just another regular story about a girl’s life. Actually it is a well written story…why? Well the author is a man that writes from the point of view of a girl that starts her journey as a little girl and ends up as a woman. See the amazing part is that Lamb has created a character that really sounds like a woman…considering that he is a man.
Well the story is about a girl, Dolores that lives a tragic life. And when I mean tragic, I really mean tragic. Everything that we hope and wish that won’t ever happen to us, happens to her. As a little girl she sees how her parents grow apart. Her mother is pregnant, but unfortunately loses the baby. Her father begins to have “the wandering eye” for another woman. Her mother tries to keep them together, but is physically abused by her husband because he no longer agrees with her. So the family splits up in the end. Her mother is taken to a mental hospital because she can no longer cope with everything.
Dolores then moves with her very Catholic grandmother, who sees everything as a sin. Dolores is now in her teen years and her mother has come out from the mental institute. Her mom begins to have a relationship with her mother’s tenant, who is married by the way. That guy ends up raping poor Dolores and no legal action is taken. The guy and his wife move to never be seen again. Dolores’ mom, Bernice, doesn’t know what to do so she showers Dolores with pure junk food. Perhaps the pain will go away if she tries to eat it away. That only backfires when Dolores gains weight and ends up weighing about 250 pounds.
Time for college, but Dolores feels that she won’t fit in because of her weight and she ends up having a very big argument with her mother. Had she known that that night was going to be her mother’s, she probably would have acted differently. She only goes to college because she thinks that it will make her mom happy. She then goes hell while on campus. People make fun of her and treat her like dirt. She then runs away after having a little lesbian experiment, which she regrets tremendously. She then gets thrown into a mental institute and after several years of therapy, she is let out to start her new life.
She starts working and gets an apartment and meets a guy. A guy that gets her pregnant and tells her to get rid of it, so she gets an abortion. At this time abortions weren’t sure things, but she did not know that and it ruins future possibilities, but she didn’t know that either. Well they end up getting married and she tells him one day about her previous life which leads to a divorce. She then finally meets her soul mate, but they don’t live happily ever after. The abortion ruined some things, but she finally feels good with herself. See Dolores had a terrible life, but in the end she still moves on with it and tries to live a happy life. Although it is hard she keeps going and that’s one of the reasons why I really liked this book. I didn’t completely ruin the book for you guys…there is more to it believe it or not. I would really advise anyone to read it. I might have made it sound stupid, but it is really good. Just try it out…the worse is that you might not like it.

You know, I read this blog because the title made it seem really interesting. The more I read your blog the more I felt I would rely enjoy this book. It seems the book is full of drama but good interesting drama. Perhaps I will read this book sometime. Thanks :]
It's funny because i was drawn to this post because of the title too, but this sounds like a really good book, interesting, emotional, and hopefully happy in some moments although it sounds more like a tragedy in most of the parts you talked about. It also caught my eye that the author is a male writting the story in a females perspective...kinda interesting.
this book sounds pretty good and the fact that a man wrote it from the point of view of a girl becoming a woman and it still being a good read is amazing. i would like to know more about this book and how this man knew so much about growing up into woman hood. maybe he had a lot of sisters?
