why go to alaska?

So, I have been thinking about why someone would ever want to go to Alaska. for me, I can only see McCandless going there for a few purposes. as a human being we are compelled to have our own story and our own self satisfaction. Maybe he went to find his originality in the highest level possible. If he mad it back from his adventure he would have defined himself as a unique person to other but more so to himself. It would be his and no one elses, thus solidifying his story. Also I think he did it for the ability to get away from the masses. I am sure we all have experienced a want to demolish humanity, I know I have. We are chaotic as a species and sometimes people just crave a life of solitude. very few actually achieve this, but being the unique person McCandless is , he reached a spiritual loneliness. What better way to find your place than to be by yourself. Finally I want to mention the book theory. He was researching for a book that he wanted to write. I think in this scenario we see McCandless as more of a scholar. I'm not too sure I agree with this but who knows, the truth died with him. I'm sure there are many other reasons....so tell me what you think.

I agree that McCandless left for Alaska to get away from some human beings but not all humanity. i think he wanted to leave so he can scare the pants off his parents which sadly the man hated them with so much he decided he couldn't deal with them any more and left with out a trace. if he wanted to get away from all humanity he wouldn't have made such close connections with people and wouldn't write to them regularly. and to some nature freaks which McCandless certainly was the only way to be one with nature, the only way to love nature is to immerse yourself in it tough out in the wild use your caveman like instinct to survive. i personally would have chose a better location for this immersion like somewhere not frostbite cold.

I agree with Eric, I also would have chosen a less harsh location. I think McCandless took it all the way by going to Alaska; by stepping into unchartered terrain. He truly wanted to feel nature and feel the wild.
