Last month, I watched a movie that my parents bought me years ago and have been trying to convince me to watch because they say it is a wonderful movie. I finally took their advice and watched “The Color Purple” starring Whoopi Goldberg and ABSOLUTELY loved it. It was the first time a movie has ever been able to make me cry. I have always heard the book was amazing too so I went straight to the school library and checked it out.
“The Color Purple” is about an African American girl named Celie and her sister Nettie. Celie gave birth to two children because of her father. Pa got rid of both her son and daughter because he said it would hurt her mother too much to know. Her mother eventually died and Pa sent her to get married to a man named Albert. Albert really wanted to marry Nettie but she was too young. Celie went to live with Albert and cleaned the house and raised his children. Eventually Nettie came to live with Albert and Celie because Pa was starting to come after her since Celie left. One day Albert followed Nettie on her way to school and attempted to rape her. She kicked him and was able to get away. Albert wasn’t happy with this and sent Nettie away and told her she would never see or speak with Celie again. Nettie said that she would write to Celie every day until they are back together.
Eventually we meet another character named Shug Avery that is a local singer that Albert is REALLY good friends with. (Basically they have been friends for a really long time, and they get together every now and then and have sex) Celie has very strong feelings towards Shug even before they meet. She has seen Albert’s pictures of her for a long time and is very attracted to her. The first time we meet Shug she is very sick and Albert brought her home to get her better. The first thing she says to Celie is, “you sure is ugly!” and laughs. While Celie is helping Shug get better again they become best friends. There is also a lot of subtle sexual stuff that Shug introduces to Celie. Shug teaches her more about her body and there have been a few kisses exchanged between the girls.
Throughout this whole time Celie has still not heard from her sister, Nettie and believes she might be dead. Shug helps Celie break into where Albert has been hiding letters from Nettie. The place I am at now, Shug and Celie are reading the letters from Nettie that reveals she is alive and in Africa with the couple that has been raising Celie’s children. We learn from this couple many things about Celie and Nettie’s parents.
The book covers a couple different storylines as it unfolds including Albert’s son Harpo and his and powerful wife, Sofia. Alice Walker creates and descriptive and heart-warming story about the relationship between two sisters that have been separated for decades. The short “diary-like” entries make the book an easy read because it’s easy to read just one more entry before quitting, and are able to pick up the book again with a fresh start. This book also isn’t afraid of coming straight-out and saying exactly how it is. The language in this book is like a slap in the face sometimes because I have never read a book that uses some of these words.
..I feel like I am rambling. But I am way over 500 words at this point so yeah, READ THIS BOOK it is a really easy read and a wonderful story. (:

Sounds like a great book! I remember seeing some of the movie when i was like five or something but i did not understand it at all until I watched most of it last year. Unfortunately I don’t think I ever finished watching it, otherwise I would remember how it ended, but I forgot why the color purple was so important. =( did it have something to do with god, or Celie religious awakening?
I have understood that this book's movie was really good although I have herad some didn't like it. That maybe because of how they just tell you how it is. This book sounds like there is a lot going on but also like it would be easy enought to read without geting lost. It also sounds like it brings up things that really happen to people and that is enticing.(I think and hope I used that word properly!)
