Alright, I had just completed the first two pages of chapter 14. This is the chapter Ms. Fletcher refers to as the "Krakauer Chapter"; however, in the very first few paragraphs it poses the question of whether or not McCandless went into the wild intending to die. I have heard some questions at my table on whether or not he did intend to kill himself in the wild. I personally do not believe so, but I am putting this up for debate.
Krakauer is on "my side". He believes, from the two pages I read, that Chris' goal was to come out of the wild victorious but he knew there were dangers of going into the wild by himself. This sounds reasonable to me. Considering that he was visited Alaska before and he knows the challenge of surviving out there. McCandless also went into the desert and nearly died of dehydration, so he knows what it feels like to be on death's door. And because of that he also knows the satisfaction of making it out alive. I believe that it was this experience that made him want to challenge himself in Alaska, and the experience in the desert made him realize that he may not make it out.
What do you think? Those of you who believe that it was a suicide trip, put your evidence forward. I am interested in this kid, and I want to hear all of the conspiracy theories. Do you believe that his post card to Westerburg stating "If this adventures proves fatal..." was a warning? Do you believe that this action is unlike McCandless, and that he has been through danger before without giving his farewell's? Let me know.

I don't believe Krakauer went into the wild intended to kill himself. I think he went out there looking for an adventure and the only way he thought he could recieve the most adventure out of life was to go into the wild where no one was around and with no money. Another reason why i don't believe he intended on killing himself was because through out his journey he would find jobs to make money regardless if he would give it away, burn it, or hide it later in the future
McCandless did not go into the wild as a suicidal trip. He went for pure adventure. He wanted to set out on his own and get away from society and really get the feeling of "living".
Why would he try to get different jobs to aquire money? Why did he bring some sort of hunting gear, if he intended to die? The answer: to learn how to survive in the wilderness and get away from society.
He was a smart guy with a college education. He was far from crazy or stupid; he knew in advance what he was getting himself into and that was not intended death. Yes, it was unfortunate that he died but it was because of a simple mistake.
i dont believe he went into the wild intnding to die. i do think he thought about the consequences of his actions and really thought about the outcome of the trip to alaska. he had never been to alaska and lets face it, he was not an expert in being out into the wild, so he prepared for the worse when he said if this adventure proves fatal. i think he just wanted to push the limits and see this great place that he heard about. i think he just wanted the excitement and the rush. BUt i dont think anyone goes to alaska to die, out in the cold and the freezing (desert). if he wanted to kill himself i think he may have wanted to die in a nice warm place.
I think everyone knows he didn't travel all that way and adventure through thick and thin just to do. He could have done that anywhere so why Alaska? Yes, he knew the consequences of going into the wild unprepared but I think he intended to live. I am a little bit behind you Koyya so I haven't gotten to this question in the book yet but as I remember in the video clip Ms. Fletcher showed us, McCandless was ready to go home. I think he wanted to make it out alive and eventually go home and see his sister more than anything.
I dont think he went into the wild to die. He went in with this plan that he could be independent and be able to survive. It was a complete accident. He was a very smart kid. If he wanted to die, I think that he wouldve found a different way to die. If he wanted to die, he wouldnt have gotten rice to eat or hunt for food. He wouldve just sat in the wild to die.
According to Krakauer,McCandless had been dieing from starvation & that he also claimed McCandless had eaten poisonous seeds which made things worse for his already weak body. McCandless new what he was facing but he planned to overcome this journey not with death but with survival.
