Destiny or environment?

For my blog post, I want to discuss the same thing I asked in class. Is it really your environment that determines who you're going to be? If you live around horrible things will you end up doing horrible things? And the opposite for good. Chris McCandless grew up with what people usually wish for. Two supposedly loving parents, a great education, and money. He got what people dream for. Yet he still went out looking for something. He still longed for something bigger, better. Some probably think he's crazy. Some are probably like me and think the things he did were meant to happen, that he serves a greater purpose that none of us may know. He's touched at least one life greatly, Ron Franz, and he's probably deeple effected many more. Maybe that's why things worked out the way they did. So other people could benefit from his so called mistakes. I no longer believe that environment or influences are the only factors in determining the way ones life is going to play out. I now believe it's purely destiny. Whatever's meant to happen, will happen.

Environment plays a substantial role in shaping character, but I think personal choices are the best tools for that.

I'm gonna have to say that it's the enviroment. I think people choose their own fate... which isn't really destiny i suppose. What you experience through life is what make you... you.

I agree with you, Destinee, a lot of things rely on fate. However, I also think someone's surroundings play a big role as well. Maybe it's not a question of fate or surroundings -maybe it relies more on the person. Is the person gonna let his surroundings shape who he is going to be, or is he gonna step back and let fate take its course? Every person is different. McCandless was surrounded by friends and family, but he let his destiny pan out for itself. However, with others it may be different. They may let their surroundings act as determining factors. I believe it's really dependent on who you are, are you one that gives into influences, or do you go with your instincts and let your 'destiny' play out on its own?

i think that a childs environment shapes them but they have the power to change themselves despite the harsh or great conditions of their environtment. if they want to break the mold that their surroundings have set for them they have the power to do so but it will be difficult.
