Queston: Role Models

What confused me most is why, if he was so intelligent, why would he have such DUMB role models? How could he not have known what the authors were really like?

I especially liked how Chris conveniently overlooked the fact that Jack London wrote such romantic novels about the wilderness, when in fact he spent hardly any time out in it. He was a raging alcoholic to boot.

I believe he had these role models because to him, they weren't dumb, they were heroic. They all shared a true, deep connection with nature which is why I believe he chose these authors as his role models. He felt a strong connection to them becaue they all shared the same unique belief, just under different circumstances.

To be in love with one's words, does not mean you should be in love with the person. Cyrano de Bergerac?

I don't believe his role models were dumb. Abstract thinkers, different from society, but that does not make them dumb. :[

oh, if we look too hard at any of the writers we love, we're going to find all kinds of unsavory stuff...hemingway was a drunk. plath put her head in the oven. fitzgerald was a drunk. bukowski was a drunk and a womanizer. anne lamont had the teensiest little drug problem...she describes waking up with her nose sort of caked over and stuck to her pillow. All of these voices --- my life would be poorer without them.
