The Possible Removal of Bus 142

As motivation, often voyagers start off their trek by visiting bus 142 where McCandless ended his journey. Bus 142 has gained popularity through out the years marking as thee memorial of Chris McCandless. Although the memorial had maintained popularity it has also been a target of theft to this day. There had been items reported stolen and possibly being sold on Ebay such as pieces of McCandless mattress, the instrument panel, and even Chris's boots; the pair of boots had been reported switched with another pair. A man was prosecuted for the stolen items but the pair of boots still remains questionable. Not only was theft a problem arising for park rescuers but also visitors of the memorial were beginning to cause a bit to much trouble. As Chris McCandless had such influences like Gene Rossellini and Everett Ruess, there were pilgrimers that began to follow McCandless. These voyagers were planning to follow McCandless almost exactly. The problem with park rescuers was that voyagers may had been following him too exact; rescuers did not want to deal with another death. Even the town of Healy which is about 25 miles from the memorial wanted to remove the bus to another location, or if the bus was too fragile to move even tear it down. The town felt there had been too much of a fuss and bother over the bus.

I see how the bus could be difficult for rangers to keep in check. that would get really aggravating and even dangerous for the people visiting it and trying to copy McCandless's adventures. it looks like you researched this topic and i like the fact that you knew what you were talking about and had the facts. it made me think more about the effects Chris had on people after he passed.

Wow I never thought about what happened to the bus after he died. This is so interesting. I think they need to put the bus in a museum or something and have it protected. This is a story that will be long shared, especially with the movie out and everything. I could only imagine it being in english textbooks in a few years. And like Brittani said, it also made me realize that people are following after him. At least since his story is out there, maybe people will do stuff a little differently to not end up with the same fate.

I understand the Rangers frustration with the dilemma presented: move the bus to keep MORE people from dying and keep some of Alex's belongings from being stolen...but at the same time, move the bus and risk losing important bits of history of the final resting place of Christopher McCandless. I believe moving the bus to somewhere safe where it can be observed (but not entered) by people would be the smartest thing to do. But what if Bus 142 is too fragile to withstand its removal? It's a precious balance between preserving history and preserving the lives of would-be copycats...
